Uni ski trip fitness: get ski fit in your room

Written by Sam Martin, a Level 3 ski instructor. About 30 minutes a session, three times a week, no gym.

Day two is where uni trips fall apart

Early in the afternoon, your quads go. The people you came with keep getting back on the lift. A week costs most students the better part of a month’s budget, and a day on the sofa with your legs gone is a day you paid for and did not use.

Train the position

Skiing punishes anybody who can’t hold a bent-knee position for more than a minute, and that’s trainable at home in your room. Wall sits, squats and step-ups are aimed squarely at that point, because it’s the one that decides your week.

When to start

Start at least six weeks before you go, and earlier if you are starting from low fitness. Typically three short sessions a week in your room, in halls or back home, phone-friendly, no gym membership needed.

First time on snow?

Start with Foundation and nobody ever needs to know. 4 weeks of pre-work gets you up to speed, then Preparation takes you the rest of the way.

When the trip includes PRE-SKI

If your club or trip provider includes PRE-SKI, use the code from them at the checkout and nothing is charged. If not, tell us who runs your club’s trip.

Questions people ask

How do I get fit for a uni ski trip?

Train the bent-knee position at home: wall sits, squats and step-ups, about three short sessions a week in your room, starting at least six weeks before you go. No gym membership needed.

Can I get ski fit in halls with no equipment?

Yes. Every ski exercise works with your own bodyweight in the space you already have. Nothing to buy, no gym membership, no kit.
